Leeds United have brought Patrick Bamford to the club from Middlesbrough in recent days, and the Championship outfit should now switch their attention to Newcastle United centre-forward Dwight Gayle.
What’s the story?
Leeds were strongly linked with a move for Derby County striker Matej Vydra throughout the month of July, but according to Sky Sports News, the deal collapsed because the two parties could not agree personal terms.
It is thought that Leeds could still make a move for Vydra, however, with the recent sale of Ronaldo Vieira to Sampdoria meaning that there is still money in the pot.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side spent close to £10m on Boro forward Bamford earlier this week, and the 24-year-old will be looking to improve on the 13 goals that he managed last term.
Leeds could still be in the market for another striker, however, and the former Champions League outfit should make an ambitious move for Newcastle’s Gayle.
Gayle’s future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, and could well be allowed to leave St James’ Park before the window closes on August 9.
Have Leeds got a chance of signing Gayle?
As it stands, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez wants to keep Gayle, but that situation could change if Salomon Rondon joins the Premier League club.

Gayle only managed six Premier League goals for the Magpies last term, but the 5ft 9in ace struck 23 times in the Championship during his team’s title-winning 2016-17 season.
Gayle, meanwhile, netted 13 Championship goals for Peterborough United during the 2012-13 season, and there is no question that he is a force at that level of football.
The 28-year-old might well find himself squeezed out at Newcastle next term, and the chance to form an exciting partnership with Bamford in the final third of the field is surely something that would appeal to the Walthamstow-born attacker.
